Violation of basic human rights in Serbia
January 30 – February 12, 2026

Since the last review, we have noted the continuation of pressure and attacks on journalists, media workers, students, professors and employees in the public sector.

University professors at the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Novi Sad received identical threatening e-mail messages to their official university e-mail addresses, while the chairman of the Board of Directors of the Association of Independent Electronic Media (ANEM) and member of the Permanent Working Group for the Safety of Journalists (SRG), Veran Matić, was shown in a propaganda film at the scene of the murder of journalist Slavko Ćuruvija. A student of the Fifth Belgrade Gymnasium suffered pressure for giving a statement to N1 television, and civil activists were faced with the demolition of vehicles and other intimidation. Farmers reported pressure from the BIA just before the protest, while around fourteen female activists in the municipality of Kula received threats of revenge pornography.
